Physical Exams
What is a physical exam?
A physical exam is an integral part of an overall preventive-care checkup plan that Dr. Gandhi uses to examine any of your medical concerns or apparent complications.
During your appointment, Dr. Gandhi evaluates your medical and family histories and answers any questions you may have about your overall health.
Depending on your current health, age, and medical history, Dr. Gandhi might recommend bloodwork and other tests to get to the bottom of the issue at hand.
When do I need a physical exam?
At Medinet Family Care Clinic, Dr. Gandhi offers physical exams for any of the following reasons:
- To complete mandatory school paperwork
- To complete immigration paperwork
- To check for possible disease
- To update your immunizations
- To identify your predisposition for diseases
- To evaluate your lifestyle regimen
Dr. Gandhi might also recommend a physical exam if you’re due for surgery. This ensures that everything is in order before your procedure.
How should I prepare for a physical exam?
There isn’t much for you to do to prepare for a physical exam. However, since this is your time to ask any and all of your questions, you should consider gathering the following information:
- Relevant test results
- Medical and surgical history
- List of symptoms you’re experiencing
- The contact information of previous physicians
- List of your current medication
- Immigration paperwork
- School forms
You should also plan to dress comfortably and wear as little jewelry as possible to not interfere with the exam.
What does a physical exam involve?
The first step of your physical exam is to discuss your current state of health. From there, Dr. Gandhi checks your weight, pulse, and height, and inspects your body for any unusual growths or marks.
He then examines your abdomen and other parts of your body to check the consistency, location, texture, size, and tenderness of your individual organs.
Using a stethoscope, Dr. Gandhi listens to specific areas of your body, like the lungs, heart, and intestines. This allows him to see if any internal issues run the risk of causing complications down the line. He also uses percussion, a technique that involves the gentle tapping of your body, to identify any dangerous fluids in or around your organs.
Depending on his initial assessment of this first part of the exam, Dr. Gandhi can order blood work to evaluate your blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammatory markers, and blood sugar levels.
